Safety Rules
The
rides are not yet on closed courses which means there is no traffic
control, so you need to watch for cars passing or crossing the road or
trail on some venues, although most of the rides are in areas where
there are very few cars that cross the trails or come onto the road.
Follow
normal traffic and trail rules (stay as far right as you can), ride
single file as
much as possible to allow cars to pass (pass each other quickly), and
when on the paved river trails, follow the 15 mph speed limit. Since
there is a speed limit on river trails, when the ride is on the river
trail, all who tie for the finish at the speed limit time will be equal
finishers in results and have an equal chance to draw the top prizes.
We will
have a mass start, so in order to not impede traffic, we will have you
line up
in the order of fastest types of bikes to slower bikes to avoid a lot of
passing at the first: Male Road Bikes, Female Road Bikes, Male Other
Bikes, Female Other Bikes, Male Mountain Bikes, Female Mountain Bikes.
Speeding down the canyon after the ride is prohibited.
You must follow the posted speed limit.
Speeding increases your risk for accidents caused by debris, wildlife,
vehicles, and pedestrians on the road.
There are sharp blind turns occasionally and some of the roads are too
narrow for vehicles and bikes to pass all at the same time. By slowing down you can have time to slow
down to allow each other to pass in turn.
We will not be held liable for accidents occurring on the cool-down back
to the park. Check your brakes before
the race. Those with faulty brakes or not wearing helmets will not be allowed to sign up
for the events. You are still welcome to
ride up and have refreshments but will not be included in the results or
prizes. These
rides
have a good incline to prevent too close of drafting which will keep
you
safer (drafting will give you very little benefit in a power event like
this). If your child is prone to weaving back and forth and has a
difficult time keeping to the right side of the road even when looking
behind, it necessary to have an adult ride to the right of the child to
prevent them from veering into cars that may come around a blind turn. There
are occasionally fallen rocks on the road, so use caution especially on the downhill. We try to remove most
of the large rocks and debris the day before each event but any debris
that may be dropped the day of the event may still remain. Hug
the right side of the road closely and
when you hear cars approaching put your arm out briefly to signal to
them to
give you enough space and encourage them to slow down. We also have
flags that you can attach to the left side of your bike that extend out
to help drivers respect the 3' space law, and help them to see you
sooner as they come around corners.
