Provo Bonneville

Come celebrate Independence Day with a healthy way to start your morning by joining us for the FREE Provo Freedom Road & Mountain Bike Race July 4!  We are so blessed to live in a country where all can ride bicycles on the streets and in the mountains with minimal threats to our safety and freedom!  We have been given exclusive access to private trails and roads crossing through the Utah State Hospital property and you will get to enjoy amazing views overlooking Provo from the Bonneville Shoreline Trail (BST)!  It will be on the foothills just above the Freedom Run so that when you finish, you can go see the energetic awards ceremony for the giant running race, then relax and watch the Freedom Festival Parade!  This race has shorter and less steep options for beginners, and more intense climbs to challenge advanced riders!  Feel free to dress in red, white, and blue or in a patriotic costume!  The best costume/bike decorations gets a special prize!  We will be giving out whole wheat and white American apple pie with whipped cream and will give out prizes from many Utah County bicycle shops and other sponsors for all finishers and special prizes for the top males and females for each age division and event, $50 cash reward to the top male & female of the longest distance (Ultra) of the non-electric bike division of the mountain bike race and $25 cash reward to the top male & female of the Road Bike sprint (feel free to do both and double dip!), and goodie bags to all participants!  We will have patriotic music at registration, American flags marking all turns, and water and sports drinks at each finish line!  Fully loaded mini squirt guns will be given to all participants to use as you see fit at the finish, so feel free to bring a friend or make a friend to cool down!

Registration starts at 6:30 am at the Mountain Bike Ultra starting line at 1540 E Seven Peaks Blvd (this is a new intersection so the location that pulls up on smart phone maps is close but not the exact location-just drive up Seven Peaks Blvd until you see the gazebo, then drive to the top of the road to the dead end culdesac to park since there are no-parking signs below that point).  The coordinates are 40.243775, -111.632435.

1 Mile Road Race
The road race Sprint will be a 1 mile climb on an asphalt road, Seven Peaks Blvd.  There is only one intersection, a round about, which we will be blocking to help you go through it, but all parking lot exits will be open to vehicular traffic, so you will need to use caution at all times.  There is a bike lane along the entire course to add more safety.  The start will be at 7:00 am, 1 mile downhill from the registration area, so you need to register by 6:55 am at the latest so you can coast down to the start in time, but it would be best to register a few minutes earlier so you can warm up.  You will be welcome to ride any type of bike, and if you finish in time to switch to a mountain bike to race in the mountain bike race you can start with the mountain bike racers when you finish, or start a little late if you miss the start.  There will be only 2 bike-type divisions based on bike type for this race: Non-electric and electric, and age group categories.  The average grade is 3.6%, with a maximum grade of 15.2% (the last 20 M).  It starts flat the first mile, then gradually gets more steep towards the end.  Here is a map: https://www.strava.com/activities/627566980

The Ultra mountain bike event will start at 7:15 am at the finish area of the the road race, and is approximately a 4 mile loop.  You will be timed on the uphill portion only (about 2 miles), then are welcome to cool down on the remaining part of the loop and ride with other riders, or challenge yourself on your downhill skills but please use extreme caution.  Here is a map for the Ultra loop: https://www.strava.com/activities/627624143.  It has a short steep incline on asphalt with up to 36% grade on an early section of the route, so if you are not physically prepared to ride up this portion, feel free to hike your bike up this section.  There will be only 2 bike-type divisions based on bike type for this race: Non-electric and electric, and age group categories.  There is one steep downhill that is -27.9% grade that is a dip in the course right before the USH gate you will need to use caution on with the loose gravel, but otherwise it is mostly uphill.  It climbs 778 feet if you do the whole loop.

The Intermediate mountain bike event will start at 7:20 am above the steep section of the Ultra so that you can avoid the killer section of climbing.  It will be 3.7 miles if you choose to loop down to explore the lower trail, or about 3 miles if you do an out-and-back, and the timed uphill portion is about 1.5 miles, but is not very steep.  It will still have enough of a climb to separate you so that when you get to the single track you won't be bunched up in each others' way.  Once you register, you can drive, ride or walk your bike up to the start, which is about 0.4 miles into the Ultra course.  If you want to ride/walk from the registration area for a warm up, you need to start riding up by 7:05 am depending on your fitness level so you get up to the starting area in time.  If you choose to park your vehicle up at the Intermediate start, you may wish to do the out-and-back so that you can avoid the climb at the end of the loop.  If you leave your car at the bottom by registration, but wish to explore the loop route, you can walk or ride it up afterwards for an intense cool-down, or we can shuttle you up to your vehicle.  There will be only 2 bike-type divisions based on bike type for this race: Non-electric and electric, and age group categories.

For all mountain bike racers, once you get onto the BST it is almost flat, so you will get some great speed on this exhilarating portion of the race, but use caution to make sure you stay within your abilities as there are some rocks on the dirt path.  Also, be aware that there may be runners, bicyclists, or dogs on the trail who are not part of the race, so approach blind turns with caution and be sure to alert those you may pass from behind so they aren't startled.   There is a steep downhill section (up to -31% grade) in Slate Canyon with loose gravel, so use caution on the downhill. You may want to just walk your bike down that short section.

Prizes will be available immediately upon returning to the starting area while supplies last.  Ultra awards will be given out as follows: Top male & female get their cash prizes and trophies immediately, all those who did not win their age division can pick out up to 4 finisher prizes each depending on how they placed in their age division, age-division winners can either pick out 5 finisher prizes immediately or wait until the majority of age division winners finish for the drawing to choose a larger Ultra prize.  If you haven't finished riding by the time the majority of age division winners finish, you are still welcome to choose a large prize but won't have first dibs.

The Freedom Run will attract up to 5,500 runners and will block off the south access to the race registration, so you will have to approach it from the north side.  A map of the Freedom Run is here: http://www.freedomfestival.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/FreedomRunMap.jpg.   Plan your route to allow you to arrive early due to all the traffic from runners parking near Kiwanis Park and along the parade route.  The Run starts at the same time as our bike race, so runners will be frantically trying to find parking at the same time you will.  The suggested route is to get onto 2230 N and follow it as it turns into 900 E, then turn left or east onto North Temple Dr which turns into 2320 N and 2300 N, then follow the turn right or south onto 1450 E, which turns into a dirt road and will take you to the registration area.  If you prefer to avoid the short dirt road section, once you get to the end of the asphalt, turn right or west onto Oak Cliff Dr, then left or south onto Oak Mount Lane, which turns into 820 N, then left or south at 1250 E, then left or east at 700 N, then left or east on Seven Peaks Blvd.

The Provo Freedom Festival Grand Parade starts at 9am so you should have plenty of time to change into some dry clothes and find a good place to watch the parade.

Prizes

GOODY BAGS: Upon completion of your event, you will be given a “goody bag” with coupons, flyers, and other free surprises from our sponsors, which include bike shops and people who have your interest in mind as a bicyclist.

DIVISION WINNER PRIZES: If you are the fastest male or female for the Sprint, Intermediate, or Endurance event for the bike category you are in (3 categories: road, mountain, or other) you are welcome to pick out your prizes immediately upon returning to the prize table and leave right away if you choose.  For ultra division winners, there will be drawing, but if you can't wait for all division winners to finish before you need to leave, whether it be to continue on for a longer ride or in case of inclement weather, you can choose 5 smaller prizes out of the “Finisher” prize box and be on your way.  For those who wait until the majority of the other ultra division winners finish, there will be a short drawing in which you can choose a prize from the higher-value “Ultra Winner” prize box, which includes gift certificates or other more expensive prizes.  By doing a drawing, it will be more fair who picks from the bin first, since the prizes vary.  Age division winners in the Ultra event each get 1 Ultra prize in addition to any other prizes they receive, except for the overall winners if it is a cash prize.  The top male and female of the Ultra also get a custom made plaque/trophy!

Safety Rules

The rides are not yet on closed courses which means there is no traffic control, so you need to watch for cars passing or crossing the road or trail on some venues, although most of the rides are in areas where there are very few cars that cross the trails or come onto the road.  Follow normal traffic and trail rules (stay as far right as you can), ride single file as much as possible to allow cars to pass (pass each other quickly), and when on the paved river trails, follow the 15 mph speed limit.  Since there is a speed limit on river trails, when the ride is on the river trail, all who tie for the finish at the speed limit time will be equal finishers in results and have an equal chance to draw the top prizes.  We will have a mass start, so in order to not impede traffic, we will have you line up in the order of fastest types of bikes to slower bikes to avoid a lot of passing at the first: Male Road Bikes, Female Road Bikes, Male Other Bikes, Female Other Bikes, Male Mountain Bikes, Female Mountain Bikes.  Speeding down the canyon after the ride is prohibited.  You must follow the posted speed limit.  Speeding increases your risk for accidents caused by debris, wildlife, vehicles, and pedestrians on the road.  There are sharp blind turns occasionally and some of the roads are too narrow for vehicles and bikes to pass all at the same time.  By slowing down you can have time to slow down to allow each other to pass in turn.  We will not be held liable for accidents occurring on the cool-down back to the park.  Check your brakes before the race.  Those with faulty brakes or not wearing helmets will not be allowed to sign up for the events.  You are still welcome to ride up and have refreshments but will not be included in the results or
prizes.  These rides have a good incline to prevent too close of drafting which will keep you safer (drafting will give you very little benefit in a power event like this).  If your child is prone to weaving back and forth and has a difficult time keeping to the right side of the road even when looking behind, it necessary to have an adult ride to the right of the child to prevent them from veering into cars that may come around a blind turn.  There are occasionally fallen rocks on the road, so use caution especially on the downhill.  We try to remove most of the large rocks and debris the day before each event but any debris that may be dropped the day of the event may still remain.  Hug the right side of the road closely and when you hear cars approaching put your arm out briefly to signal to them to give you enough space and encourage them to slow down.  We also have flags that you can attach to the left side of your bike that extend out to help drivers respect the 3' space law, and help them to see you sooner as they come around corners.

Orem BST Provo Canyon

Slap on yer cowboy or cowgirl duds, saddle up yer bike, lasso some friends and family, and come join us for the FREE Country Race!  This race is great for beginners since it has very little technical skills required due to wide roads and very safe due to virtually no downhill, but will give a great aerobic challenge to advanced riders with the first 1.5 miles of incline, and exhilarating speed you won't find in most mountain bike races due to a long flat section!  Costumes are optional, but there will be a prize for the best-dressed cowboy or cowgirl!  Free country refreshments, prizes from Texas Roadhouse, many Utah County bicycle shops, and other sponsors for all finishers and special prizes for the top males and females up to 5 deep for each division and event, $50 cash reward to the top male & female of the longest distance (Ultra) of the non-electric bike division, and goodie bags will make you want to yell "YEEHAWW!!"  We will have country music at registration, and water and sports drinks at each finish line.

This race course is suitable for all bike types for the Sprint distance, but to continue on for any of the other
distances you will need a wide tire with good traction for the dirt/gravel road which has some rocks, loose gravel on steep sections, and ruts in the road.  A mountain bike would be the fastest and most comfortable.  There will be only 2 bike-type divisions based on bike type for this race: Non-electric and electric, and age group categories.

Registration and the start is at 1580 N 800 E, Orem, just north of the Orem Cemetary at the intersection of 800 E and Cascade Dr. near 1600 N, at 4911'.  Registration will be at 7:30 am, and the race will have a mass start at 8am.  Parking available along 800 E Street. A hot country breakfast and Sprint, Intermediate, & Endurance prizes will be available immediately upon returning to the starting area while supplies last.  Ultra awards will be given out as follows: Top male & female get their cash prizes and trophies immediately, all those who did not win their age division can pick out up to 4 finisher prizes each depending on how they placed in their age division, age-division winners can either pick out 5 finisher prizes immediately or wait until 9:30 am for the drawing to choose a larger prize.  If you haven't finished riding by 9:30 am you are still welcome to choose a large prize but won't have first dibs.

The Sprint event will be 0.5 miles up Cascade Drive (plus 0.5 mile back untimed, total of 1 mile), an asphalt road open to motor vehicles (although traffic is minimal since there isn't room for many cars up at the top and usually slow due to the steep incline) to the large dirt parking lot just past the water towers right before the asphalt stops.  It is 7.8% overall grade, with a maximum incline of 19% for a brief section.  It has a 205' elevation difference from the start, ending at 5,116'.

The Intermediate event will be 1.4 miles (plus 1.4 miles back untimed, total of 2.8 miles) and continue to climb another 431' of elevation up the main road passed the gate which is closed to motor vehicles where it turns to a dirt road, Bonneville Shoreline Trail (BST), and climbs to the top where you can see an outlook of Provo Canyon, quite a rewarding view.  It has an overall average grade of 8.3% and ends at 5,529' with a total elevation difference of 636'.  The maximum grade is 36% for a brief section, so be prepared to dig deep!  The Strava segment is called "Torture to Water Stop" (https://www.strava.com/segments/2351180), which has the attempts of 241 people recorded.  Feel free to turn on your Strava and try to beat some records and see how you compare to those who have done this segment in the past!

The Endurance event will continue another 2.3 miles along flat section of the BST to the gate where the road forks, for a total distance of 3.7 miles (plus 3.7 miles back untimed, total of 7.4 miles).  Due to adding so much flat to this distance, the overall average grade is 3%.  It has a short dip in the road, with a maximum of -27%, so be careful as this is the only steep downhill in the race.

The Ultra event continues past the gate at the fork going left through the narrow opening on the left of the gate onto the smoothest and widest dirt road of the whole race for a total distance of 5.2 miles (plus 5.2 miles back untimed, total of 10.4 miles).  This section from the end of the Endurance to the end of the Ultra is a 1.3% grade, only climbing another 104'.  The finish is at 5,624' for a total elevation gain of 920', and elevation difference of 713' from the start.  From the finish line you will be able to see Bridal Veil Falls across the canyon.  The road goes down a steep descent at this point, so we end it here.

If you would like to explore on your way back to the awards table at the start you are welcome to take any route you wish on the way back.  There are many single track trails, other dirt road routes, or you can also go down to the paved Provo River Trail and make your way back along the Murdock Canal Trail (MCT) (there is loose rock if you continue on the road, which leads to Canyon Road, a fast 50 mph highway, before allowing you to get back on the MCT).  We are not liable if you get lost or hurt, so if you are not familiar with the area or are riding alone, it is best to return along the course.  Make sure that you stay to the right and yield to racers still racing, slowing down around blind turns so as to prevent a collision.  The BST occasionally has a few Orem City and Division of Wildlife employees who open gates and drive up the roads, but they usually drive slower due to the dirt road, so always stay to the right during the race and ride single file except to pass quickly.  There are a few walkers and runners running along the road, and occasionally some unleashed dogs, and horseback riders, so get their attention politely when you are approaching them to help them prepare to allow you to pass and not be startled.  The course is not closed for the race.
